Johannesburg residents will face a 19-hour water shutdown on Friday as Johannesburg Water undertakes essential maintenance. The shutdown coincides with concerns raised by the DA regarding Johannesburg Water's performance and the city's ongoing water crisis.

Johannesburg residents will face a 19-hour water shutdown on Friday, February 14th, as Johannesburg Water undertakes essential maintenance on the F33 pipeline. The maintenance will commence at 6:00 am and is scheduled to conclude by 1:00 am on Saturday, February 15th. The work involves repairing a leaking bypass pipe, and while Johannesburg Water aims to complete the repairs within the allocated timeframe, an alternative water supply will be provided if the duration extends beyond 24 hours.

This planned shutdown coincides with concerns raised by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng regarding Johannesburg Water's performance. The DA filed a formal complaint against Johannesburg Water with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) alleging that residents have endured inconsistent water supply, with some experiencing complete water outages for up to three weeks. The DA cites residents' struggles to cope with intermittent water flow, often relying on nighttime trickles or seeking out scarce water tankers. In 2024, Johannesburg Water implemented water throttling measures to manage water systems and consumption as supply levels dwindled. Rand Water, the utility responsible for providing water to the Gauteng region, has also confirmed a concerning decline in reservoir levels, dropping from 70% to below 40% since last month. DA leader in Johannesburg, Jack Bloom, asserts that the Johannesburg Council is in violation of Section 27 (1) (b) of the Constitution, which guarantees everyone's right to sufficient water. Bloom emphasizes the severity of the situation by highlighting the numerous testimonies from residents detailing the hardships caused by water shortages, including difficulties in maintaining hygiene, flushing toilets, preparing meals, and providing care for infants and the sick. He further states that these shortages have led to health issues and incurred additional expenses for both households and businesses. Bloom urges the SAHRC to hold the Johannesburg Council accountable and implement immediate relief for residents affected by the critical water situation in 28 out of 61 reservoirs and towers that are either critically low or completely empty. The DA Gauteng also calls upon the provincial government to declare a disaster and provide urgent assistance to affected residents through increased water tanker deliveries while addressing the underlying causes of the persistent water crisis.
