Johannesburg Transport MMC Funzela Ngobeni says the Gauteng Roads and Transports Department has already appointed new contractors to maintain 231 traffic lights in the province.

They ended their traffic signal maintenance and repair partnership after failing to renew their Service Level Agreement.According to Gauteng's Transport MEC this is due to the Joburg Roads Agency not having its taxes in order.

"This agreement it is positive in my view, it an way that it ends the impulse between the entity and the province, it gives now the province a go-ahead to start repairing and maintaining those traffic lights and from our side, although we regret that we couldn’t continue with the SLA with them, we actually welcome the fact that residents of the City of Joburg will know now that the is an entity that will be fully responsible for these traffic lights that are on provincial roads.
