Joburg residents in designated areas are warned of potential extended power outages for several hours due to scheduled network maintenance by City Power. The news comes amidst widespread power disruptions in the city, attributed to aging infrastructure, electricity theft, and billing issues.

Joburg residents in certain areas have been alerted to anticipate extended power outages next week, which could persist for several hours. City Power is scheduled to carry out network maintenance on Thursday, April 3rd, impacting the power supply at its Observatory Substation. City Power has advised affected customers to exercise caution and treat all electricity supply points as live, as the supply may be restored at any time.

\As residents brace for these blackouts, many more will experience power interruptions this weekend. The ongoing electricity challenges stem from a combination of factors, including aging infrastructure, rampant electricity theft, and billing inefficiencies. Recently, City Power disclosed that the utility is hemorrhaging billions of rands annually due to these issues. Technical losses amounted to R1.5 billion over the past year, while non-technical losses exceeded R2 billion. \The utility's CEO emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the repercussions of past decisions are now manifesting. He stressed that if infrastructure improvements are not undertaken, these losses will continue to escalate. The Auditor-General has already flagged this issue, highlighting City Power's responsibility to address it years ago. To enhance service delivery, City Power has secured alternative funding sources with the support of its shareholder, signaling a commitment to tackling these deep-rooted challenges and restoring reliable power supply to the city
