JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg City Power said there are a number of government offices across the city that owe millions of rands in outstanding electricity payments.
The utility disconnected the power supply to a number of buildings in Hillbrow on Monday - including the National Treasury offices in the city centre.City Power is unable to invest in electricity infrastructure due to the lack of compliance by businesses, residents and some government offices. The entity said it is not that government offices have no money to pay for electricity but merely a lack of compliance.
The utility's spokesperson Isaac Mangena said they will disconnect the power of government buildings with outstanding payments in Johannesburg."The precedent that should be set is that government departments shouldn't wait for us to come to them they should actually come to City Power, especially, if they're under distress or under financial difficulties and they are not able to pay for services.
