Formal sector earnings were higher in Q2 in South Africa – and there are plenty of jobs that pay higher than the national average salary.
The latest data from Stats SA shows that the average salary in South Africa – for the formal, non-agricultural sector – has increased to R26,000 a month.
Meanwhile, the regular salary/wages paid to employees rose by 2.6% from R738.5 billion in March 2023 to R19.3 billion in the quarter ending June 2023, Stats SA said. Stats SA’s Quarterly Employment Survey data covers eight key industries or sectors in South Africa, which is split further into 20 sub-categories, mainly made up of various manufacturing sectors, as well as a split between government and non-government community and social services.
Notably, of the 90 jobs covered by the survey, 46 job types pay higher than the national average – with the highest average being R67,169 per month for those working around financial intermediation in the business services sector.
