An encouraging comeback after a recent wave of Covid infections:

New jobless claims ticked down to their lowest level during the pandemic last week, falling for the seventh-straight week and adding to a slew of promising developments for the labor market, which has struggled to add back workers who left jobs last year but has nevertheless staged an encouraging comeback as the recent wave of Covid-19 infections eases.

Continuing claims, also known as insured unemployment, also fell to a new pandemic-era low, of around 2.1 million, falling 129,000 from the previous week. In an email, Greg McBridge, the chief financial analyst at Bankrate, pointed to the stark improvement in claims year over year as a sign of the economy's progress, noting about 20.8 million received unemployment benefits across all programs in the comparable week last year.

: “Employers having difficulty finding workers are holding on tight to their current rosters, as evidenced by the consistent declines in new unemployment claim filings.”Though the labor market has strengthened in recent weeks, the delta variant-spurred wave of Covid-19 infections this year proved troubling for its recovery, with the pace of hiring struggling despite record-high job openings.
