Collection of new Newfoundland and Labrador short fiction has punch
Lisa Moore is the editor of "Hard Ticket: New Writing Made in Newfoundland".ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — This collection of 17 short stories — a genre with a distinct Canadian pedigree — is an assemblage of introductory punch, narrative compaction, clear-cut and assured characters, and affective and even haunting ambiance.
Another helpful hint is to create someone to care about, Benjamin C. Dugdale’s “Starecase” supplies an utterly unique protagonist, a Batman-worshipping six-year-old who feels invulnerable, even magical, but whom the reader knows is neither. His perspective on events just becomes more and more intriguing, in terms of what he observes and what he makes of it. “Middle-Uncle’s come from the Quonset across the road to tell my mom about some prank him and Baby-Uncle are pulling on my father.
Then there’s the inimical cast, setting, and arc of Jim McEwen’s torte-rich “Lost Villages”: “I don’t think we were bad boys, not too bad, but we were certainly boys. Once we thought we took such great bites out of day and night. We were making our stories … everyone by our last names like we were hockey players, like we were important men. We took turns forsaking each other.”
