On Monday, the Hate Crime and Public Order Act came into force amid concerns about how it will be policed and the impact on free speech.A new offence has been created against stirring up hatred against protected characteristics including age, disability, religion, sexual orientation and transgender identity.

On X, Rowling dared the police to arrest her under the new act after making a series of posts on social media calling trans women men, including convicted prisoners, trans activists and other public figures.
