Renowned writer Jimmy McGovern returns to tackle the issue of the prison system in the second season of Time, shedding light on societal failings. Drawing from his own experiences, McGovern questions how society treats those who have broken the law.

The legendary writer has more than earned his reputation as one of the most significant voices in British television as social justice has been at the heart of his vital body of work. The 74-year-old has returned to familiar territory to shine a light on an important societal issue as he once again explores the failings of the prison system for Time season 2, which premieres on BBC One at 9pm tonight.

Jimmy's understanding of how life can shift in a moment is key to his writing process - as he explained he always wants to show the humanity within his characters, no matter what their situation is. He said: "I've got that notion that if you are a writer you are every character's perfect barrister. He said: "That just appealed to me but I knew then I couldn't write it on my own. It's difficult to write about female prisoners because there is such an emphasis on the female body.

He said: "You do learn all the time. No matter who you work with. Nobody involved in the production of the Dockers took money because it all went to buying the Casa so I knew I would go into writing that and end up skint. He said: "The train was heaving and I said 'did anyone ask you what was in the big cardboard box. She said 'no'. I said 'if you'd got that train at Lime Street, everybody would have known what was in that box by Edge Hill.'

"The sensibilities about the portrayal of Liverpool, the negative stereotypes hanging over the city of burglars and thieves was absolutely pernicious then so I much preferred to work in the city, but set stuff outside of the city." However, changing cultural attitudes now means Jimmy does not receive as much backlash about setting hard-hitting dramas in the area he loves as Time season two was shot around the city region.
