The power has long-since returned, but Jimmy Fallon still managed to cull plenty of comedic material from Saturday night’s blackout in New York City.host joked that he needed to get through his opening bit because Manhattan “could lose power at any second.”
“What a crazy weekend here in New York City, there was a huge blackout,” he said Monday night. “For hours New Yorkers were trapped on subways, traffic was at a standstill, there was no air conditioning at the Port Authority, then the blackout hit.” After making life in New York sound rather frustrating — with the constant subway snafus and grinding traffic — Fallon went on to praise the city’s residents for taking charge during the blackout.“That’s exactly what you want. Five strangers pointing in different directions at the same time,” he quipped about the people bravely standing in the middle of a busy intersection.
Con Edison blamed the city’s power grid protection system for the outage. At the height of the blackout, about 70,000 customers were without power. The outage happened on the 42nd anniversary of the July 13-14, 1977 New York City blackout, which knocked out power to most of the city.
