The Aggies coach said he feels comfortable having two quarterbacks in Conner Weigman and Max Johnson.

Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher says the quarterback competition between Conner Weigman, left, and Max Johnson is wide open.COLLEGE STATION — Oklahoma softball has won the last two national titles and owns five in the last decade. Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher has noticed, in using the Sooners and their perpetual approach to competition as an example.

“It’s gonna be a competition all the time, every week, all the way until the end of next year,” Fisher said when asked about the quarterback battle in particular. “Every position is going to be that way.” “They’re two competitors, and they’re always gonna keep battling each other … you’re glad you’ve got two guys who are capable and can make plays,” Fisher said. “ I like for them to have a little failure like that, and see how they battle back.

“If I named a starting quarterback today, what does that mean? Nothing,” Fisher said this month. “If he goes into fall camp and doesn’t do anything and doesn’t play well, it doesn’t matter. And that’s at every position. Competition is the name of the game.” Calzada is at Incarnate Word and King, last year’s starter over Weigman and Johnson, has transferred to Georgia Tech. Two years ago during another quarterback battle Fisher promised that Calzada and King were both “NFL talents,” which perhaps could still come true.
