Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz broke away from some of his NFL peers for a novel approach vs. the 49ers.

Linebackers Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, left, and Sione Takitaki, right, were important parts of the Browns' nickel-based plan to stop San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey on Sunday.. The injuries were stacking up high, and experts and media personalities alike predicted the 49ers to roll into Cleveland and continue their undefeated season.

Against the 49ers, defenses played nickel — a personnel grouping with five defensive backs and two linebackers on the field — just 11.1% of the time. Conventionally, this makes sense, as defenses have thought to put three linebackers on the field in order to stop the run, the key component of the 49ers offense.

In a similar line of thought, Schwartz altered which linebackers played the most in the 49ers game to fit his overall strategy of putting more speed on the field.Here’s a look at the percentage of snaps each linebacker played vs. the 49ers, compared to the percentage the rest of the season:Sione Takitaki Owusu-Koramoah, who is considered an undersized linebacker at 221 pounds, played almost 80% of the defensive snaps against the 49ers.
