The House returns for a third round of balloting for a new speaker as Rep. Jordan fights to win seat.Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, House Judiciary chairman and staunch ally of Donald Trump, meets with reporters about his struggle to become speaker of the House, at the Capitol in Washington, Friday, Oct. 20, 2023. The House voted as Rep.
Ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy rose in the chamber to nominate Jordan, portraying him as a skilled legislator who reaches for compromise. Ahead of the vote, Jordan showed no signs of stepping aside, insisting at a Capitol press conference: “The American people are hungry for change.""At every step of the way Republicans have rejected bipartisanship and embraced extremism," Jeffries said before the vote. "Jim Jordan is a clear and present danger to our democracy. He wants to end social security as we know it. He wants to end Medicare as we know.
