Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and fuel industry stakeholders have collaborated to address a recent jet fuel shortage at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), ensuring uninterrupted operations for airlines.

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and stakeholders in the fuels industry have collaborated to develop a plan ensuring the transportation of jet fuel for OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA). This plan addresses the recent shortage of jet fuel , preventing disruptions to airline operations. The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) spearheaded the logistics plan, which was finalized in a meeting convened by Minister Creecy on Friday, January 31st.

A significant influx of jet fuel has been injected into the pipeline over the past week, with an additional 59 million liters expected to reach ORTIA by February 6th. This substantial increase in fuel supply is anticipated to alleviate the existing restrictions on airlines and restore fuel supply closer to normal operations.Furthermore, 71.5 million liters of jet fuel are scheduled to be imported into Durban via three vessels arriving on February 5th and 10th, respectively. The total available stock for February is projected to be 150.6 million liters. To provide additional security and prevent future shortages, the fuel industry has agreed to establish a mechanism facilitating the sharing of fuel across contracted airlines. This system will enable airlines experiencing supply disruptions from their contracted suppliers to access fuel from non-contracted suppliers.Minister Creecy commended the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved in resolving the fuel shortage crisis. She expressed gratitude to airline customers, partners, and the public for their understanding and cooperation during this challenging period
