“At the end of the day, you’ve got to respect the mountain, right?” said Farkas. “I don’t see it as a failure or a setback though. It’s about safety and setting an example for making safe outdoor decisions.”, forecaster Mike Conlan wrote that cold weather early in the season has led to numerous problematic layers in the snowpack that make conditions ripe for avalanches.
“Some professionals are comparing this snowpack to 2003, which was one of the worst years on record for avalanche fatalities,” he wrote. “This winter presents a very different set of problems than normal and we need to adjust our mindset to remain safe.”Article content
