The TV presenter said he no longer wished to run a restaurant at the Oxfordshire site made famous by his Amazon series Clarkson's Farm
has given up ambitions to run a restaurant at his Oxfordshire Diddly Squat farm following a row over planning permission.
In a letter to West Oxfordshire District Council, the TV presenter said he no longer wished to open a restaurant at the site. The council denied him permission for the venture in January last year but he went on to open the restaurant anyway that summer.Arguing it constituted a “material change of use”, the council said the parking, toilets and traffic were “visually intrusive and harmful to the rural character, scenic beauty and tranquillity” of the area, which is an area of outstanding natural beauty.
However, the resulting traffic in the area has led to protests from locals, with complaints that fans were queuing on roads for hours in order to visit the shop. In his letter, Clarkson said it was “great news” that “thousands of people” had visited his farm shop from around the world, though he admitted: “It did create traffic problems in the area, and I recognise that this infuriated some people in the local village.”
