The careful balance ofis that Lynsey helps James too; a commendable effort is made to render James as a full person, not merely an empty angel there to deliver this wounded young woman out of her pain.
seems to be holding its tongue, not wanting to offer too much lest it all tilt into melodrama. A late reveal about Lynsey’s brother introduces a whole scope of issues that the film has no time left to address. Lynsey’s mother, played with an odd accent but pleasingly weary flounce by, can only provide so many clues as to who her daughter is. We’re keenly aware of Lynsey’s circumstances, but an opaqueness blocks our view of how she processes that context.
