In 2007, then-Miami U.S. Attorney Acosta allowed Epstein to avoid federal charges for sexually abusing underage girls in a non-prosecution agreement seen as an unusually light punishment given the severity of the charges., Acosta buckled under pressure from Epstein’s team of lawyers, which included Alan Dershowitz and Kenneth Starr. At his confirmation hearing, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine asked Acosta about the plea deal.
