Screen Rant interviews Jeff Byrd (featherfilms) about directing the harrowing StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds episode'Under the Cloak of War,' working with the Star Trek cast and what he believes was the truth about Dak'Rah:
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 8, "Under The Cloak of War"Director Jeff W. Byrd helms this week's harrowing and powerful episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which delves into the scars of the Klingon War still carried by Dr. Joseph M'Benga , Nurse Christine Chapel , and Lt. Erica Ortegas .
Jeff W. Byrd: Well, the script was by the amazing Davy Perez. He's an incredible writer, and I will say, he's written some of the best episodes of the series. And this episode was just right up there. And it was incredible. Going into it, when I read it for the first time, I was like, "Oh we have to lean on a lot of close-ups here." Because I really want people to see what's going through their minds through their eyes.
Babs, Jess, Melissa, especially, and Robert Wisdom were fantastic. We really saw the scars of war in their performances. I have the highest respect for this cast. What was it like directing them? And also Clint Howard! You got Clint Howard in your episode. The cast did their homework to the 10th power and would bring a lot of that back to me. And I would compare a lot of that with the homework I did. We would then go in every day ready to play with some of that homework. I'd say, "Okay, let's give the Star Trek version. And now let's dig in deep. And let's give the documentary version. Let's give the version of it if there was a documentary crew following M'Benga and Chapel around while going through all this stuff.
And the reason why is because it does affect things that happen in the future, which for us is the past, because we've already watched the episodes. But for our Enterprise crew here, it's the future coming up that they don't know anything about. So I love that you keyed upon that dinner scene. And the dinner scene was actually a lot longer than what you saw. There was a lot more. Other little Easter eggs in the longer version that maybe they'll release somewhere down the line.
