Longtime San Diego State assistant coach returns to offensive coordinator role with eye on streamlining things for success
Jeff Horton is a lot closer to his last rodeo than his first one, but there was no hesitation when Horton was asked to accept an expanded role with the San Diego State football team.
His second stint in the role begins Saturday night when SDSU hosts Hawaii , although Horton doesn’t see himself continuing as OC beyond the balance of this season. Horton, 65, has four decades of coaching experience that includes head coach at two other Mountain West schools — UNLV and Nevada — and interim head coach in the Big Ten — at Minnesota in 2010 — as well as a position coach for two NFL teams — the St. Louis Rams and Detroit Lions.
“The one thing I want us to do is play with great energy, great toughness, just be excited about being out there and trying to do everything we can to help the football team win.” He spoke about streamlining the offense, identifying a few plays they can be successful with, running them over and over in practice this week and then executing them against Hawaii.Starting QB Braxton Burmeister has been under concussion protocol this week.
“It all looks good,” Horton said, “but what are you going to get better at? We’re really just trying to narrow things down where the guys feel comfortable with it.”
