'jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy' is a wonderful look back at the early days of Kanye West and his relationship with his mother that flies too quickly past some key moments in Ye's life.
In Kirk Walker Graves’ excellent book on “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” arguably Kanye West’s greatest album, Graves perfectly summarizes West when he says: “The innermost contradiction that makes Kanye who he is, the one that makes him both a great artist and a great boor, is his overindulgence of everything childish within himself.” It’s that childlike attitude that has made Kanye one of the most captivating musicians of the 21st century, but also, one of the most difficult to defend.
As the name implies, jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy explores the life of Ye in three different parts. Act I, entitled “VISION” shows West as a young producer making a name for himself and desperate to get signed as a rapper. Act 2, “PURPOSE,” follows West after his car crash that broke his jaw threatened to dismantle his rising rap career, and the massive success that came with the release of his debut album, “The College Dropout.
While Coodie is there from the beginning, first interviewing West in 1998, Coodie’s attempts to inject his own life into this story of West at times feels like a way to center this story around himself.
But in comparison, “AWAKENING” flies through some of the most essential moments of West’s public life at this point. There is barely any mention of West interrupting Taylor Swift’s speech, or West stating that “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.
