The former prime minister will turn 90 early next year and is celebrating 60 years since he was first elected MP and 30 years since he became prime minister.Chrétien talked about his decision not to join the war in Iraq. He said the Americans pressured him to join the campaign.
He said he assumed they would be angry with him after he chose not to join the war. He recounted a conversation with former president George W. Bush, where the U.S. president told him that they were disappointed, but not angry, because Chrétien had been upfront.The convention paid tribute to Chrétien’s late wife Aline who died in 2020. He said she was essential to his success and his greatest councillor.
“When I left office in 2003, I spoke to the Liberal convention and I said that Liberals must never ever lose their social conscience. It is more important today than ever.”
