Mike Wilner: Jays right-hander Alek Manoah looks much like his old self in Double-A start

, to pitch for the Double-A Fisher Cats. A night game, to have Manoah throwing under the lights. A real crowd — anticipated, anyway — on a fireworks night during the Fourth of July weekend. The threat of rain kept a lot of them away.

The outing started well enough. Wearing an unfamiliar number 43, Manoah threw a first-pitch strike to each of the first three batters he faced, allowing a single and a pair of fly balls before walking cleanup hitter Nathan Hickey on four pitches and coming back to strike out Niko Kavadas to end the inning.

With Manoah clearly working on mechanics, delivery and strike-throwing, the opposing Portland Sea Dogs made it a track meet at every opportunity. Lugo stole second, then Manoah almost picked him off. The next batter, Alex Binelas, hit a soft line single to right to score him. The fastball was a big weapon for the 25-year-old, who is trying to work his way back to the big leagues. Manoah settled into dominant form in the middle innings — at one point striking out eight of nine batters, the majority of them on fastballs.
