Smothers started under center on Saturday, a week after playing only one series behind Zion Webb. The Nebraska transfer threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Galban in the first quarter, giving the Gamecocks a lead they would not relinquish. Redshirt freshman Te’Sean Smoot played most of the fourth quarter at quarterback with the Gamecocks up big. He did not attempt a pass, but rushed for 18 yards on four carries.
