Since the San Francisco 49ers drafted the defensive tackle in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he’s played in just 18 games. Whether it’s been knee injuries or shoulder issues, Kinlaw hasn’t been able to stay fully healthy in his first two years out of college. That’s been frustrating for both the 49ers and Kinlaw, who really started to come into his own in the second half of his rookie season—recording 1.
After battling knee tendinitis in his first season, it was still a nagging issue to begin year two and kept him out of the 49ers’ first game of 2021. Kinlaw made it back for Week 2 but tore his ACL a few weeks later and underwent season-ending surgery to repair it in October. He recorded just seven tackles and one quarterback hit in those four games before missing the rest of the season.
Coming into the 2022 season, Kinlaw is back with the team and fully healthy, even saying that he’s been playing without any pain so far in the preseason. Even if he didn’t say anything to indicate how much better he’s feeling, the way heSan Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan has mostly been careful with the workload he’s given Kinlaw in preseason games so far to avoid rushing him back and aggravating his knee issues.
This past week against the Minnesota Vikings, even in the teams’ joint practices ahead of their game, Kinlaw stood out with his physicality and ability to straight-up bully offensive linemen. In one instance, he even bulldozed a Vikings guard for a huge pancake.
