Vaccination will prevent early deaths and lifelong health problems. If this is the goal, then governments should think carefully about the best way to attain it.
Vaccines save lives. Over the past century infant mortality has plummeted, thanks in part to vaccines. But they only work if a significant number of people are vaccinated and if their vaccinations are complete. The recent measles outbreak in B.C. has re-invigorated the discussion over whether or not vaccination should be mandatory.
Parents who still don’t wish their children to be immunized, for religious, ethical or moral reasons, will have to obtain a notarized form stating that they understand the health risks and educational consequences. Children who aren’t immunized might be suspended from school. Recent research and historical examples show that, in fact, parent education may be more effective than the government compulsion that has sometimes been used in the past. Most parents who don’t vaccinate aren’t stalwart “anti-vaxxers.” Instead, they’re “vaccine hesitant.” They may have heard that vaccines cause autism or they may be concerned about how many vaccines their children are receiving.
This would be more difficult today as our media environment is far more complex. Anti-vaccination advocates can easily spread disinformation on the internet. But far more could be done today to persuade parents that vaccines are safe and effective. We could also do more to show how dangerous diseases like measles can be.
