A judge issued the sentence Friday after hearing emotional testimony from friends and family of both Aaron Allan and Jason Dane Brown.
of murder and marijuana possession in the killing of Allan, an officer trying to help Brown after a car crash on the south side of the city. Moments later, Brown fatally shot Allan.
"This is an exercise of comparison. It is looking at how this case fits among other defendants, other crimes, other situations," he said."Whether I give him the maximum or the minimum, it isn't going to bring back." The sentence was delivered after emotional testimony from family and friends of both Brown and Allan, and Brown himself.
His sister, Ciera Brown, said they grew up in an abusive household where drug use often occurred. In one case, she said, her brothers bore the brunt of physical abuse from one of their mother's previous boyfriends. Stoner said the documented brain injuries were a factor in his sentencing decision, while noting Brown refused medical help numerous times throughout his life over fear he'd lose his driver's license or get in trouble for his drug use.
