Astroscale and JAXA's ADRAS-J mission could help prevent a 'devastating' Kessler syndrome scenario, according to COO Chris Blackerby.
During Astroscale's webinar, Chief Operating Officer Chris Blackerby said the company will "share new information [on a revised launch window] once we have more concrete details."is part of a collaboration between Astroscale and Japanese space agency JAXA for Phase I of its Commercial Removal of Debris Demonstration Project .Once in orbit, the ADRAS-J spacecraft will rendezvous with an H-IIA upper stage that is currently orbiting Earth at an altitude of approximately 373 miles .
Broadly speaking, RPO includes debris observation, as well as approach, capture, and deorbit. The ADRAS-J mission won't deorbit the H-IIA upper stage, though. Instead, it will approach and observe the large piece of space debris. . Now, it aims to demonstrate that it can approach and fly alongside a large piece of space debris with immense precision. For its rendezvous mission, the ADRAS-J spacecraft will feature advanced instruments, including laser rangefinders, LiDAR cameras, and multiple onboard computers. Once it does launch, it will rendezvous with its target within 3-6 months, Fujii explained. After the mission has concluded, the spacecraft will reenter Earth's atmosphere.
