No one in Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s government will attend the Beijing Olympics. But Tokyo isn’t calling it a boycott.
TOKYO—Japan said Friday it would join the U.S. and other allies in refraining from sending cabinet-level officials to the Winter Olympics in Beijing, but it avoided calling the move a diplomatic boycott.
Government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno said Seiko Hashimoto, a member of Parliament who headed the organizing committee for the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, as well as the head of Japan’s Olympic committee, Yasuhiro Yamashita, would represent Japan in Beijing. Mr. Matsuno said no cabinet member or other official in the administration of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida would attend.
