Experts say years of courting Tokyo, by successive US administrations, has paid dividends for Washington and is transforming Japan, the world’s third-largest economy, into military power that will help maintain the global balance, as an over-stretched US contemplates the possibility of having to fight conflicts on multiple fronts, in Ukraine, Taiwan and theSigns of Japan’s increasing geopolitical engagement are also apparent following its assumption of the G7 presidency.

“I’m surprised by the fact that the Japanese government made this decision to boost defense capabilities so significantly,” said Narushige Michishita, a professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo and a noted defence expert, told Foreign Policy magazine. “There must be something that indicates that we have to make a response swiftly and decisively,” he said.
