The prime minister was safe, and a person was detained at the scene at a port in Wakayama in western Japan, national broadcaster NHK and other media said. Reports said a pipe-like object was thrown near Kishida, who was speaking outdoors. An explosion-like sound was heard at the scene, NHK reported, adding that Kishida took cover at the site of the explosion site and remained safe.NHK said Kishida was beginning a speech after touring a fishing harbour in the city when the incident occurred.
