Former White House deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews, a Kent State University graduate from North Canton, said Thursday that she was so disgusted by Trump’s refusal to act that she decided to resign her job.
Sarah Matthews, former White House deputy press secretary, testifies as the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol holds a hearing at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, July 21, 2022. WASHINGTON, D. C. -- The U.S. Capitol was under attack. Former President Donald Trump’s supporters rampaged through it, chanting that Vice President Mike Pence should be hanged.
Matthews told the committee she had been one of the first communications staffers hired by Trump’s re-election campaign and joined his White House communications team when Kayleigh McEnany became press secretary. She was appalled by what transpired at the White House while the U.S. Capitol was under attack and said Trump’s tweet about Pence “was the last thing that should have been done.”
Trump responded to Matthew’s testimony with this statement: “‘15 minutes of fame’ Matthews, who I didn’t know, is clearly lying.” “For hours, Donald Trump chose not to answer the pleas from Congress, from his own party and from all across the nation to do what his oath required,” Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney agreed.
