The Republic of Ireland winger was diagnosed with autism last year and says it has helped him in his football career - but also in understanding his daughter Willow
James McClean has opened up about his recent autism diagnosis and how it has shaped his career and personal life. The diagnosis, which came last year, is something he shares with his six-year-old daughter Willow-Ivy.
McClean, who boasts an impressive 103 senior caps for Ireland and nearly 600 club appearances across a number of leagues, is known for his fiery temperament and unwavering principles, often making him a target for abuse from some opposition fans. Discussing his relationship with his daughter, who was present at the event along with his wife Erin, McClean shared: "I think she will always be daddy's girl. Erin will tell you, Willow runs the house. What Willow decides we do, we do.
"She has her one v one there and they have been absolutely brilliant helping her come along in certain aspects of life. "She is a lot more independent doing things for herself so maybe one day she will be able to move out and have her own independence."
