Jake Cronenworth expected to man first base this season, but could still see plenty of time at second base, too
He is a two-time All-Star and drove in the decisive run in the decisive game of the biggest postseason series victory the Padres have had in a quarter-century.
Healthy himself after playing 158 games last season despite a hip injury he won’t talk about, Cronenworth has started spring training hot. He’s hitting .419/.500/.677 in 36 plate appearances after Thursday’s 3-for-4 day that included his second home run of the spring. Cronenworth identifies as a second baseman because he has started 268 games there. He has also started 45 at shortstop and 29 at first base. Additionally, he subbed in 15 times at first base last season, a half-dozen of those as a defensive replacement for Eric Hosmer in the ninth inning in what Melvin referred to as his “four shortstop” defense.
He batted .360 two doubles, two triples and two home runs in Hosmer’s absence and played in every game the rest of the season — starting 37 there the rest of the way, three at shortstop and two at first base. Jake Cronenworth, right, celebrates while headed to first on the go-ahead two-run double as Ha-Seong Kim heads to home during the seventh inning in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Dodgers.
