Nearly all sides have condemned the appointment of a special representative to combat Islamophobia who linked Quebec's religious symbols law to “anti-Muslim sentiment” — but not Jagmeet Singh, who condemned the 'piling on.'
Amira Elghawaby is facing calls to resign for having linked ‘anti-Muslim sentiment’ to Quebec’s religious symbols law.New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh listens to a question during an availability on Parliament Hill on Jan. 19, 2023, in Ottawa.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh doesn’t believe that Amira Elghawaby, the federal government’s special representative to combat Islamophobia, should resign, despite calls from the Quebec government and some MPs for her to do so. In a press conference on Monday, Singh told reporters that it’s problematic that her critics are “piling on” a racialized woman, and that he didn’t think a resignation was justifiable since she has clarified her position to say Islamophobia isn’t a problem unique to Quebec and that he agrees with her.
“Hate is like a fire. If it’s allowed to take hold against any one community, it can spread, consume all communities, and we have to take a strong solidarity position against any form of hate,” he said. “In this case, Islamophobia is a serious problem that we need to deal with.”
