USWNT is starting to find its groove again with a mix of attacking veterans and rising talent.
There were plenty of upsides in the United States’ 2-1 win over Japan on Saturday in Atlanta. It was almost a complete flip in energy from last year’s SheBelieves Cup showdown between the U.S. and Japan, a narrow 1-0 U.S. win in which Japan severely limited USWNT’s shots. At the time, then-head coach Vlatko Andonovski called Japan a team that was “so fluid in the way they interchange position and find the areas.” This year, that fluidity belonged to the U.S.
“So that’s something that I’m continuously working on,” she said after the game. Advertisement Although Shaw didn’t see a full 90 against Japan, she made those minutes count on both sides of the ball. Shaw wasn’t the only one doing the defensive work either. It was a hallmark of the attacking unit as a whole, enabling its aggressive, and sometimes risky high press.
