Man United forward Jadon Sancho's time at the club looks over but there is always a way back, as Harry Maguire has shown in recent days.
If you think you have no future, it makes it a whole lot easier to pack up and leave. But all it takes is a glimpse of change or hope to muddy the waters and suddenly make that decision a lot more complex.
While there is a certain sympathy to be had for Sancho - if he feels he has been wrongly and very publicly criticised he has a right to defend himself just as publicly - that sort of insubordination can't be allowed to stand. Cristiano Ronaldo didn't get away with it so Sancho certainly won't. It seems a simple decision for Sancho to make, with the only complication being his next destination, if he can no longer see a future at Old Trafford. Yet, there is always a way back from the brink, as Harry Maguire is proving.
The centre-back came in for criticism for turning down guaranteed football but it's a good job he did as United have been so ravaged by injuries in defence that a route back into the side has presented itself. Without the burden of captaincy weighing him down and a monkey lifted off his back, Maguire is enjoying his best run of form for years.
