Former president alleges hatred and violation of his rights to a fair trial
Former president Jacob Zuma, who faces the prospect of spending the next 25 years behind bars, has accused the lead prosecutor in his corruption case of being driven by “hatred” towards him.
Zuma is fighting for a permanent stay of the corruption, fraud, racketeering and tax evasion case against him, which has its genesis in events that played out in the late 1990s. That argument was completely rejected by both the Pretoria high court and the Supreme Court of Appeal, which criticised Hofmeyr’s evidence and dismissed the NPA’s reasoning as irrational and unlawful.
“I believe he did this to magnify his deeply held belief that I should be prosecuted and convicted at all costs. At the time Shaik was charged, then prosecutions head Ngcuka said he had decided not to charge Zuma — despite there being prima facie evidence against him — because he was not sure that case was winnable. He did so against the advice of Downer and his prosecution team.
