Marc Dos Santos doesn’t care to trust the process. The first-year Whitecaps coach just wants to win.

Sam Hinkie, the former Philadelphia 76ers GM, was seen as a visionary, a roster mystic when he talked about “trusting the process” back in the summer of 2013. Losses didn’t matter. The results didn’t matter — don’t panic, because things will get better.

The Whitecaps have made the playoffs just four times in their previous eight seasons, advancing to the Western Conference semifinals just twice, the lone bright spot — and meaningful title — a Canadian championship in 2015. “Are we in a critical situation? For me, if you’re talking about making the playoffs, of course we are. Yeah, 100 per cent. We can’t be delusional. We can’t be talking about ‘it’s only the beginning,’ and at Game 15, we say ‘it’s only the beginning.’ We have to win. We have to get points.”“We can say that there’s lack of finishing, there’s lack of opportunities, but the team has shown growth in every game. Yes, it’s a process. Is the team going to be stronger in 2020? Absolutely,” he said.

They also see a team like the L.A. Galaxy lean on their icon, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, to create and score the deciding goals in last week’s game at B.C. Place and wonder, for the umpteenth time and ninth season, why they don’t have a player of his stature to cheer for. “I think what I have is guys that if our collective organization is always together in the 90 minutes, I think I have players who in the big key minutes can make a difference.
