He may be at full fitness right now, but Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has reflected back on the injury that left him the most frustrated in his career. SLSiya Read more:

Arguably the most successful goalkeeper of his generation, Khune has endeared himself to the Amakhosi faithful and will undoubtedly go down in the Chiefs folklore as one of the best to ever do it.

He is not the wily teenager that fans were introduced to back in 2004 when he was promoted to the club’s first team and at 34, is in the twilight of his career, although he has maintained that he wants to emulate Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon in terms of his longevity. But the 2018/19 season threatened to bring a premature end to Khune’s glorious career, when he suffered a shoulder injury that saw him sidelined for nine months from December 2018 to August the following year. An event that the man from Ventersdorp puts down as his most frustrating.

“I’ve had quite a number of injuries in my playing career, the one that scared me the most was the shoulder injury when I was out for nine months. That was the longest and the most frustrating injury I’ve had. I’m glad that I’m 100% now and I’m willing to go an extra mile for the club,” Khune told KC TV.Khune has also opened up on the legacy he leaves once he hangs up his gloves, having served both club and country with distinction since becoming the first-choice goalkeeper in 2007.

“The legacy that I want to leave when I retire is for people to remember that Itumeleng Khune was there and that he played a huge role. There’s no one who wants to be remembered as a failure. I want to be remembered as a major part in Kaizer Chiefs winning trophies, dominating South African football and I think I’ve played over 350 matches, and I’ve kept over 150 if not 200 clean sheets.
