Ride was a member of the Space Shuttle Challenger crew that lifted off on June 18, 1983.

She had a bachelor’s degree in English and physics from Stanford University and a master’s and Ph.D. in physics from Stanford.She was scheduled to be on a third crew but it was canceled after thethat killed the entire crew including the first teacher in space, Christa McAuliffe. The other astronauts on that mission were Francis Scobee, Michael Smith, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, and Gregory Jarvis.
Retiring from NASA in 1987, she became a science fellow at the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University and, in 1989, joined the University of California-San Diego as a professor of physics and director of the California Space Institute. In 2001, she founded her own company, Sally Ride Science, to pursue her passion for motivating girls and boys to study the STEM fields-science, technology, engineering and math.
After a 17-month long battle with pancreatic cancer, Ride died on July 23, 2012. Ride was 61 when she died at her home in La Jolla, Calif. Ride had been married to a fellow astronaut, Steve Hawley from 1982 to 1987. Ride received the NASA Space Flight Medal, the NCAA’s Theodore Roosevelt Award and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
