Andrea Osorio, who immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 14, was able to use a library card to establish her identity during a traffic stop. “I can literally say it saved my life. It saved me from being deported that day.”Last November, Andrea Osorio was flagged down by a police officer for the first time in her life.
When she pulled over, the officer approached her window and asked to see her driver’s license. Osorio told him hers was expired. He asked to see an alternative form of ID.He accepted it, wrote her a ticket, and told her that she needed to arrange for someone to come pick her up because she wasn’t supposed to be driving.
The San Antonio Public Library began offering the enhanced library card in November 2020. Developed with input from the advocacy organizations Stand Up SA and Texas Organizing Project, the card can be used as identification. The free card sports the holder’s name, photo, address, date of birth and phone number.
“We are really afraid because it is up to the police to decide if they call on us or not,” Osorio said.“We were kind of looking at, ‘Is there something the city of San Antonio could do, short of a municipal ID, that would be helpful to people who need something … with their picture and their name on it?’ “ said Dale McNeill, assistant director of public services for the San Antonio Public Library.
