Although you won’t be popular if you go round the garden centre checking roots willy-nilly, once you fix on the plants you wish to buy, it is worth checking the roots. Roses are often newly potted, but this is not sinister. The best roses are field-grown and for easy retailing they are dug from the field, potted and offered as essentially bare-root plants. They come to no harm from this and “take” well.

As well as congestion, check the root colour and integrity. Dark, reddened and brittle roots are much less likely to do well at home than plants with pale, strong roots.
