After a year-long volunteer and community effort, the Yarmouth Splash Park is opening. “I’m excited and I’ve been crying at the same time,” said committee chair Linda Gallagher after the water features were installed. 'It's pure joy.'
YARMOUTH, NS – As the water sprayed, splashed and squirted, it was hard to tell who was more excited – the kids enjoying the water features, or the volunteer committee that has worked for a year to see the Yarmouth Splash Park become a reality.“I’m excited and I’ve been crying at the same time,” said committee chair Linda Gallagher. “Just to see every one of the features as they were being put up - it’s pure joy.
While there were municipal and other government-level financial contributions, the community strongly rallied behind the cause by making donations – which came from organizations, businesses, and individuals – and by supporting numerous fundraisers, which included raffles, an auction, a fun run, a community meal, a giant yard sale, a towel sale, and more.
Since a sod turning in late May, work at the site has included excavation work, installing water and sewer lines, installing the concrete pad work, hooking up power, installing the water features, and more. Leading the charge on the landscaping work on Aug. 27 were members of the Hilton family – including Peter Hilton who was digging in, literally, to oversee the landscaping.
