Look out for flying footwear when San Anto Cultural Arts’ summer block party returns to San Antonio on Friday.
After a two-year hiatus, the San Anto Cultural Arts Barrio Block Party is back. This year’s theme is Chancla Fest, a celebration sure to bring some extra ¡Sas! to the neighborhood. The flip-flop will take center stage with a chancla-throwing contest, chancla-inspired art activities such as chancla necklaces to decorate and more fun with the storied instrument of punishment wielded by Mexican-American matriarchs across generations.
“We wanted to do chancla-themed because it’s summer and we figured starting or ending the summer on a lighthearted note would be really fun,” said Cassidy Fritts, San Anto’s community mural and public art program coordinator. “And the chancla theme also spans across generations, too. There’s going to be something for everyone to really enjoy and laugh and have fun with.”
Of course there’s more to the block party than just flying footwear. Providing a soundtrack to all the action will be musical acts such as the self-described “Xicano roots fusion” band Los Nahuatlatos and youth DJs from the AM Project digital arts and music program. Chancla Fest also will host vendors and live screen printing.
