Kim's latest SKIMS campaign has been accused of heavy Photoshopping – and it's not the only one.
We want to see women in all their glory: cellulite, stretch marks, fat rolls, wrinkles, spots, pores, pigmentation – we want to see their bodies exactly as they are. We want diversity, too – it’s ok to see typically ‘beautiful’ women, of course, but we want to see women and people that don’t fit society’s standard of beauty as well.
Tyra has a beautiful body – why can’t she be shown exactly as she is? Not everyone has an hourglass figure and that’s great – bodies all come in different shapes and sizes and the more we see that variety represented in the media, the better. As we age and our faces inevitably change, we wonder why we don’t look like Helena Christensen or Heidi Klum.
The same goes for ageing – people age and that’s ok, but the fact that an intense blurring filter is automatically applied to anyone over the age of 40 shown in advertising is not. It presents a warped and inaccurate view of ageing and continues to contribute to body dissatisfaction and negative self-esteem – because as we age and our faces inevitably change, we wonder why we don’t look like Helena or Heidi Klum.
