The scariest part of starting a business is not knowing what you don’t know. The grim spectre of messing up in ways you didn’t even know could be messed up intimidates women and prevents them from the prospect entirely.
And that’s not surprising; as a demographic, we’re far less likely to even apply for jobs if we don’t meet 100% of the qualifications, so there’s nothing shocking about the fact that more women aren’t launching businesses because they don’t feel qualified. After all, if you’ve never done it before, you technicallyDon't let inexperience keep you from trying. But there’s power with inexperience.
The employee, who I’ll call E., had been with us for a few months. This was during the early days at the company, and we’d been in a period of strong, steady growth, but when you’re a young business striving to outperform older and stodgier competition, it can be draining to maintain. E., I learned too late, felt otherwise. She felt she was being worn down, and soon there’d be nothing left to grind away. The hours, she said, were more than draining, and more than tiring; they were harmful. Harmful to her relationships, harmful to her life outside of work, harmful to her larger ambitions. She didn’t think she could keep working like this and have a career she felt was worth having.
If that all seems obvious, you’ve never run a business before. It’s so easy to get lost in the work that you lose perspective. And has blind spots and knowledge gaps. The trick is not to let them scare you away from taking your shot.
