She said she has “mixed emotions’ as the party swept Edmonton in an orange wave and picked up further seats in Calgary but could not gain enough momentum to bring the party to a majority.

Polls were slow to report results Monday but as the screens displayed the NDP leading in ridings, the room erupted in cheers and whistles and the buzzing atmosphere surged. In Edmonton South-West, Nathan Ip, a trustee with Edmonton Public Schools, defeated UCP incumbent Kaycee Madu, who served as justice minister — becoming the first Black person to do so in Canadian history — and deputy premier during his time as MLA. Madu was the only Edmonton MLA elected in 2015.
