Israel strikes key Yemen port, killing three after Tel Aviv attack
A huge column of fire erupting following reported strikes in the Yemeni rebel-held port city of Hodeida on 20 July 2024. The strike triggered a fire which reportedly injured 87 people.
"The blood of Israeli citizens has a price," Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said, adding more operations against the Huthis would follow"if they dare to attack us". Israel's military said on Sunday it intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, the latest in a series of Huthi weapons downed off the Red Sea resort town of Eilat in recent months.
The attack targeted"fuel storage facilities and a power plant" in Hodeida"to pressure Yemen to stop supporting" Palestinians in the Gaza war, he said. Maritime security firm Ambrey said it observed four merchant vessels in the port at the time of the air strike and another eight in the anchorage.The United States, which along with Britain has carried out several rounds of air strikes against the Huthis in an attempt to put an end to their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, said it played no part in Saturday's strikes.
"The kingdom will not allow its airspace to be infiltrated by any party," said Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki.
