Israel's military massed troops on the border with Gaza as airstrikes pummeled the Palestinian enclave in the wake of Saturday's attack by Hamas.
Israeli leaders didn’t discuss a mass evacuation order for northern Gaza in meetings Thursday with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, according to a U.S. official.
Blinken told reporters he did discuss concerns for civilian safety with Israeli leaders as Israel gears up a possible ground operation against Hamas in Gaza. A U.S. official said Israel had discussed setting up zones for civilians as a part of the Gaza operation, and some diplomats appeared surprised by the order for a broad evacuation of northern Gaza. Blinken is scheduled to meet on Friday with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in Jordan.
